Analysis of The Last Class by Alphonse Daudet and Short Film

When we look at a wide range of films reflect more visually and the written texts are detailed. This is the comparing “The Last Class” story and the short film that are the delicate story of a young Alsatian boy and his last French lesson. The subtext of this text conveys their sadness at the removal of their language, which had difficulties due to the Franco-German war in 1871. Prussia took Alsace Lorraine. In German occupation, it was decided to abolish the French language.

The graffiti on the wall appears to emphasize the German occupation at the beginning of the short film. The little boy sees the crowd of people and he moves on and looks at the writing on the wall but when we look at the story itself, it starts with a little boy being late for school.

In the short film, we see the people listening to the teacher besides the students but we have no idea who they are. In the story itself, we know that these people are from the village. We learn who they are with this section "as silent as we were: old Hauser with his three-cornered hat, the ex-mayor, the ex-postman, and others besides" in the text.

Monsieur Hamel emphasizes that he has the last french lessons and keeps to support students in short film and story. We understand from the subtext that he is sad and not satisfied with this situation in both.

Monsieur Hamel was standing until the end of the short film, but it is emphasized in the story that he sat and stood up when the Prussian returned. In the short film, we watch the book in the hands of Monsieur Hamel delivered to the little boy, but in the story, we read after writing "VIVE LA FRANCE!" then he leaned against the wall and said, “This is it; Go. ".

Although it is a fictional story, the subtext is given on both sides. It is based on real events in Alsace after France-Prussia. The story emphasizes that war affects the lives of ordinary people in this town. After the war, people have to give up their mother tongue. It's a story that makes how to feel important and shows a difficult situation for them.
